Gull Conflict at Pildammsparken — the wild edge of spring ritual

Gull mating behaviour at Pildammsparken in Malmö, and what I first assumed to be a graceful courtship turned into something far more intense. I raised the camera just as the male landed, wings wide in dominance, the female pinned and resisting. Their shrill calls pierced the air — not melodic like robins or larks, but sharp and urgent, unsettling in their own right.

Nature is often presented to us as peace and beauty. But as any field observer learns, it also includes scenes of power, force, and survival. This moment, raw and chaotic, reminded me that animal behaviour isn’t written for our comfort. These gulls, like many birds, engage in mating displays that can be rough, with females offering varying degrees of resistance — and consent in the animal world is complex and troubling to interpret through a human lens.

These gulls are common across Europe and well-known for their raucous colonies and aerial acrobatics. During breeding season, males display dominance through vocalisations, feeding gestures, and mounting. What may appear violent to us is often a part of avian reproduction — but it’s also a moment that challenges us to confront the wild as it is, not just as we wish it to be.

I didn’t expect to capture a scene like this. I was initially watching for courting behaviour or even gentle feeding displays. Instead, what unfolded was sudden and forceful. I hesitated to publish the photos, but the truth is, we don’t only photograph nature for its beauty — we do it for its truth.
