Perched gracefully on a single leg, the green-winged teal at Fulltofta Nature Reserve resembled a motionless sculpture. It was enveloped in a peaceful state between rest and calmness. The morning cast a quiet stillness over the pond. This turned the petite duck into a motionless figure, blending seamlessly with its mirror-like reflection. It was a rare moment of tranquility in a world constantly in motion.
Species in focus: The green-winged teal (Anas crecca)
This distinctive small duck, among the tiniest dabbling ducks in Europe, stands out with its deep chestnut head. The iridescent green hue glimmers on its wings during flight. This trait lends it the moniker “green-winged teal.” During spring, they congregate around serene freshwater marshes like Fulltofta. They quietly forage along the water’s edge. Despite their demure size, their colours shine brilliantly under the right lighting conditions.

Contemplation and silence
Observing the green-winged teal poised motionless in the morning’s reflective surface carried a sense of meditation. It served as a gentle reminder that life continues to pulse even in moments of utter stillness. The water, the swaying reeds, and the concealed life beneath the surface all contributed to this feeling. And this bird, at rest without the need for action.

The lighting was simply enchanting. Spotting the green-winged teal from afar, I approached cautiously. I leveraged the low morning light to capture both the bird and its reflection. Patience was key for the shot. Any slight disturbance could disrupt the delicate symmetry.
