Great Spotted Woodpecker at Fulltofta – A Drumbeat in the Spring Forest Canopy

The presence of the great spotted woodpecker at Fulltofta was evident long before it came into view. The rhythmic hammering reverberated through the trees like a steady heartbeat, exuding a sense of confidence and purpose. Upon finally sighting the distinctive black-and-white figure perched on a twisting birch tree, I couldn’t help but smile at the sight of this skilled artisan at work.

The Melody of Wood and Determination

Fulltofta Nature Reserve, particularly in the tranquil morning hours, carries a symphony of sounds. The gentle rustling of leaves, the delicate steps of deer on the forest floor, and the resounding percussion of the woodpecker marking its territory echo through the woods.

The great spotted woodpecker, a proficient craftsman of the Scandinavian forests, navigates tree trunks with precision, utilizing its vibrant plumage, firm tail, and unwavering determination to tap and explore with impressive strength. The males often select deadwood for their displays, focusing more on the acoustics than sustenance.

This particular woodpecker seemed almost theatrical, perching on a dead branch illuminated by a beam of sunlight, creating a dramatic play of light and shadow. A true display of woodpecker artistry.

Spotlight on the Great Spotted Woodpecker Species

As one of Sweden’s prevalent woodpecker species, the great spotted woodpecker stands out with its distinct black-and-white markings and striking red undertail. The males exhibit a vivid red patch on the back of their heads.

In contrast to their more elusive relatives, the lesser and middle spotted woodpeckers, this species exudes confidence and curiosity. Once attuned to their drumming rhythm or sharp calls, you’ll realize how frequently they are nearby, just beyond sight.

They carve nest holes in soft or decaying wood, and during spring, their drumming serves as both a call, a challenge to competitors, and an invitation to potential mates.

The most demanding aspect? Tracking the woodpecker as it spiraled up and around the tree trunk, scarcely pausing at any point.

Reflection – Tune in Before Looking

Birdwatching, like photography, favors those who listen attentively. Before seeing, we often hear — and the great spotted woodpecker serves as a maestro of forest sounds, not merely residing within it but composing alongside it.

On that morning in Fulltofta, with the cool light and damp moss, all it took was a moment of pause to let the forest guide my gaze.
