Painted Bunting at Taronga Zoo, Sydney – Some birds wear colour like camouflage. Others wear it like theatre. And then there’s the Painted Bunting — a bird so vibrant, so unapologetically bold, it feels like nature painted it just to show off.
A Burst of Wild Colour
I spotted this male Painted Bunting perched in the filtered light of Taronga Zoo’s walk-through aviary. His colours shimmered like heat through a prism: royal purple on his crown, lime and turquoise across his cheeks, coral and ruby through his chest and flanks.
Native to North America, the Painted Bunting is a rare sight in Australia — but here in Taronga’s carefully curated aviary, he thrives among other international songbirds, still carrying the charisma of the wild.
And oh, how he knows it.
Photographer’s View
📍Location: Taronga Zoo, Sydney — within the rainforest aviary, under soft mid-morning light.
📷 Camera: Sony A7C + FE 200–600mm G OSS
⚙️ Settings: ISO 800 | 1/2000s | f/6.3
Handheld, from about 6 meters away, using the reach of the 600mm to isolate the subject from the darkened background. I exposed for the plumage — letting shadows fall off naturally so the colours could glow. The depth of field blurred everything but the most expressive detail: the curve of his head, and that eye, glinting with wild defiance.
The Painted Bunting – A Bird of Myth and Colour
The Painted Bunting (Passerina ciris) is sometimes called “the most beautiful bird in North America”, and rightly so. Their kaleidoscopic feathers make them a coveted sighting for birders in the wild — and a quiet joy in zoological collections where conservation and education meet.
To see one this closely, to study its layers of colour and light, is to witness a kind of natural alchemy. It’s not just a bird. It’s a living canvas.
A Moment of Connection
In that brief glance — bird to lens — I felt something oddly intimate. The zoo setting might be constructed, but the connection was real. This Painted Bunting didn’t just perch. He performed. And I was lucky enough to be there for it.
